I have a Nikkon D3100 and have the kt lens (18-55) and a sigma 55-300 lens. I've had the camera for a ccouple years now and just recently when i attach the 18-55 kit lens and then turn the camera on I get no power indictors and the sreen remains bllack This happens even on a fulll battery charge. When I attached the Sigma lens it works fine. If I detach the18-55 lens, turn the camera on, then attach the 18-55 it will then work. Sometimes after I've done this and turn the camera off again, then back on, it wont come back on...I'm connfused with this problem and I'm not sure if the lens, lens contacts or the camera is the issue.

Thanks

Sounds like maybe the contacts are dirty on the kit lens. Try cleaning them with a pencil eraser. Make sure you don't leave any residue or pieces on the eraser on the lens when you put it back on the camera.

I forgot to mention that i cannot adjust the aperture size anymore either...

Explain fully, please. You can't adjust it manually? Through the camera? What setting do you have your camera on......Aperture Priority? Shutter? On P [Program] Mode? Be very specific in your question.

Something else I'd like to mention to you, too. NEVER attach or detach your lens while the camera is on! Weird things happen when people do this!

Thanks! That did the trick. While I visually inspected the contacts and they did not appear dirty at all to the visual eye, it did appear to clean them as there was light residue that came off on the q-tip.

I'm not in the habit of removing lenses while the camera is turned on, but I decided to try it to see what happens.

As for the aperture problem. There is a +/- button that should be used in conjunction with the thumb wheel and this is what stopped working with both of my lenses. I just now figured out an excellent work-around that now works without fail. I if put the camera in A mode, the thumb wheels now controls the aperture directly, then I switch back to M mode which is where I do almost all of my shooting to control the shutter speed.

I'm on a budget and I'm looking for a macro solution. I'v seen some that attach to the lens, and extension rings and the reverse mount. I realize none of these are the best for great quality macro but was wondering what others experience was with theses. I've seen several on Amazon like this one: Amazon.com: Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Snap-On Lens: Camera & Photo

Thoughts?
