I have a D3100, and my roommate sold me his AF Nikkor 50mm. It was working fine...However, now when I try to use it my display says "lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture...", which I have done but I am still getting a notification on my display...is this an easy troubleshoot or is something seriously wrong with the lens?...If you can tell, this all a bit new to me...help?

Which 50mm f1.4 are we talking about here? If it is the Nikon 50mm f1.4D lens, then you need to make sure that the orange tab or aperture ring is set and locked at f22 (if my memory is correct). Otherwise, it will give you an error. The lens will only work in MF only using your D3100 camera.

I've noticed that there has been an increased in numbers where a member joins, post one question and that's the end of it. The poster might not even read back or watch his/her post. Thanks for the link.

I am seeing that as well. Though my advice is by no means "expert", i am begining to have second thoughts about trying to help new members.

The lens is a AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4D f/1.4. The highest aperture is 16, which i have locked to...still getting a display stating I need to lock the aperture.

Well thank you for the link.
I am new, but I assure you that I am in need of help and have been searching through the forum to find answers.

All i can suggest it this: turn off the camera. Take the lens off. Make sure the CPU contacts are not dirty. Make sure the aperture ring is set at F16, slide the orange tab (the lock) towards you or the back of the lens. Put the lens back on the camera. Put your camera in M mode, turn on your camera. I amnot sure what else to suggest.

can you try a different lens,, also,, try it in manual mode, see if the error goes away.. since you can't auto focus anyway,, it might be a contact issue,, if you have the lens at f16,, really don't even have to have the lock on,, the lock is just to keep it at F16, but as long it is at F16 or whatever is the smallest aperature then the camera can work.. sometimes, you have to add just a light harder twist to get good contact.. Not too hard, these cameras are not that tough.

I tried doing what was suggested...still no go.
My other lenses work fine. This obviously is not an easy troubleshoot and unfortunately I guess there is something wrong with the lens...
