Is VR necessary when shooting motocross and car racing?

Just watched the Moose Peterson blog video re the AF S 70-300 VR and he says clearly leave the VR on all the time so who knows.

I will say the couple times I did forget to shut it off the pics were ok....

FWIW ( probably nothing! )

Further I have seen multiple copies on my local C/L going in the $300 price range... The non VR versions languish a long time at under $100 locally

I don't believe he's well versed in the arena of sports photography. In this case, it's probably a good idea to disregard his blanket statement.

I use it for panning, otherwise if shooting over 1/500sec, like others have said, it's not really needed--the shutter speed alone will freeze action and shake without the need for stabilization.

Leaving it on, even at high shutter speeds can cause issues, especially older VR lenses where the activation induces a lot of movement. I've grown to prefer Tamron's VC over Nikon's VR.

I am a big fan of Tamron's VC myself, IT WORKS GREAT!!!! I have the 24-70mm F2.8 and the 150-600mm lenses and I am very happy with both of them.
