When I take a picture (not utilizing the rear screen), the camera takes the picture fine, then I can no longer see through the view finder. If I use the screen, it works fine.

We need a whole lot more information than what you are providing. What camera/lens are you using? By the "rear screen" are you referring to the LCD?
