Often when I travel, I take the downloaded D5100 manual along on my laptop. But I am traveling this time only an iPad...is the manual online anywhere?

Beat me to it!

Also, if you have it on your laptop, wouldn't it be the same for the iPad??

I don't know squat about Ipads, (or any other kind of tablet for that matter) but if it has a USB port, can you put the manual on a memory stick and just plug it in to read it?

Assuming the iPad/Tablet/computer has a PDF Reader installed, then yes; absolutely. The download will get you a .pdf formatted document (.pdf is delightfully "platform agnostic") so all that's required to read the downloaded file is Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit Reader, etc.

When you browse it "online" it actually caches the pdf file on you iPad anyway, so you might as well download the thing. It's not THAT big.

On my iPad I have loads of manuals...the D5100, D7100, my Jeep, my wife's washing machine(really,) and many more. I'm a manual freak....
...I have 35+, and I read them off line in iBooks. Memory used is ~650MB
So lots of room for other things too.

Often, USB port is not an option for smartphones or tablets.
I have PDF versions of all my camera related manuals loaded to the SD card on my Mobile phone. Comes in handy from time to time :)
