Interesting strap fixing point

You would probably want to tether that so that there is no risk of the screw backing out and the camera falling though.

I've seen some of these and they're rather well made (of aluminum).

Like most straps and such that use the tripod socket, this product uses a thick rubber gasket that prevents the screw from backing out once it's tightened.

Yes, but at what expense. I have a black rapid strap myself with the thick rubber gasket... I've had to end up tightening it up at intervals when you are moving around and the camera gets knocked around against your body.
So you can look at it as being cautious or take it as a lesson learned if it falls.

I've been using this system for 18 months on 4 cameras with zero failures. Cost for all 4 cameras was less than one of those.

As for bottom of the camera strap mounts of any kind - can't stand 'em. When I'm shooting a lot of verticals I simply put the right end on the same ring as the left. More times than not the camera is in my hand anyway, so it's completely out of the way. Camera goes in the case, strap goes in the pocket.

..

I've started using a teeny-tiny drop blue LocTite for this. I can still pop the part off easily, bare handed, but it stays put otherwise.

i would bet that Clear nail polish would do that same thing. That is what we used to do when I worked in electronics many years ago. We would us a hard to find color on screw heads so we would know if anyone had opened the cover for any reason, It also had the side benefit of keeping it from coming loose by itself.

I like the black tape. I had that problem for a while but never lost it. It has not come off lately though.

When I raise it to my eye and don't see it I know it's on the car seat. In the car I tend to place them on the passenger seat next to me with the back of the camera against the seat back. I suspect that when I put them down the friction from the seat back as it slides a bit is enough for them to pull up. I've never lost one, and I've never found one anywhere else. Got the tape idea when I went shooting with my brother and saw it on every one of his.

I lost mine in Spain whilst on a trip, I got 2 replacements from eBay and they have been solid and actually clip in better than the official one, so I have one on the camera and one in the bag as a spare I do lose one

Same way I transport my camera a lot of the time and the same place I have found mine on a couple of occasions. The other place I have found it is in the camera case.

Reading this thread has caused me to decide to modify my setup. I am using a Black Rapid sport sling, which attaches to the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. I don't like the way that hangs the camera, virtually upside down. So I'm going to have my local custom leather/etc shop build me something that converts it to use the two strap loops on the top sides of the camera.
