Here's a nice read that sums up some of Nikon's horrible QA track record of the last few years. But something I didn't realize was that the D600 has a DX auto-focus system while the D7100 has an FX auto-focus system? Is that accurate?

It appears so.

I had a 'play' with the new AF on the D7100 and it is quite the business (bearing in mind I have a D5100).
I like the fact that if you put the D7100 into 1.3x crop mode, the AF points were at the edge of your image.

It's not a DX focus system as much as the same focus system as using on DX cameras. Which I would read as "no focus points outside the DX sensor range". I cannot confirm or deny that since mine has not come back from Nikon yet. I can confirm that I posted a link to the piece already and maybe the mods can merge them.
