Interesting News About Lightroom 5.5 For Folks Worried About CC Subscriptions

Saw this today. Thinking about it, it's a pretty amazing "give away" from Adobe for anyone who buys a subscription and then leaves. Essentially, you get to keep the organizational and print functions from LR after you cancel. So you don't lose any work done in them, and you can continue to use that version of the tool for those purposes for as long as you want.

I took the plunge and now fighting my way up the PS learning curve.

I think Adobe have finally got the offer right. LR + PS for monthly payment of £8.78 incl VAT ($10 in US)

Interestingly their share price has gone up since the announcement.

I previously had LR and CC on two desktops and one laptop. For CC I could only log two machines in simultaneously, but LR ran on any without authentication. I only use the laptop when I'm away so I wasn't trying to run 3 copies at any point, in fact normally just one at a time which complies with the licence. Since loading 2014 it now authenticates LR and disables the develop module until you log in.

I guess I can't complain but it was convenient the way it previously worked.

I'll just pass along, for whatever it's worth, a great little Photoshop tutorials site I don't see getting much mention around here.

I cut my teeth on Scott Patterson's tutorials on his site Photoshop Essentials. He has a lot of great stuff on his site for free and I have some of his paid-for tutorials (in PDF) that I might be convinced to... uh... "archive remotely" on your PC if you're interested.

Something about the way he explains Photoshop stuff just makes things "click" for me.

I'm still not sold. If I have a stand alone program on my computer, I can ALWAYS get to my photos. And no monthly fee. And no security issues with a cloud of any kind. And I don't have to have an Internet connection at all times.

Probably, I'm just one of those old guys who is slow to adopt new technology, but I still don't see this as a step forward.

You don't need an internet connection at that point to do anything... you always have access to the program, and your photos. Once a month, when you access the program on your computer, it will ping Adobe's web site to check for updates...

Any photos YOU elect to store on Adobe's web site, are OPTIONAL and proactively done by YOU....

Now, tell me what else you're afraid of...

Thanks for setting me straight, guys.

Okay, this goes to show that I should check my facts a little more completely before assuming the worst. In light of what I have learned, the subscription thing sounds less frghtening. I think I'd still rather just have a stand alone, but this has got me rethinking things.

When you have the paid subscription thing, are updates to Lightroom and PS automatic?

Hmmm. Especially now that Aperture will no longer be updated, I might have to seriously consider the change.

Yes... That's one of the benefits of the service.

The benefit to Adobe is, they know what their cash flow is...and they continue development. The subscription removes an element of risk for Adobe.

The benefit to the subscriber is, he gets updates automatically as they occur.
