installing a lens hood

just got a DC II 52mm tulip lens hood but as usual, have questions.the hood has a removable ring that looks like a gear and can be screwed right off the body of the hood. what is this used for? also after a little experimentation i noticed that since the hood is attached to the lens, it too will move when the lens auto-focuses. so what good is that given the 'petals' move off center when the lens turns? how do you keep the thing straight?

Hmmmm, not sure you should be concerned about the hood moving around. The hood has two functions: take away flare and to protect the lens. Again, not sure if the performance of the lenshood will be affected if the petals are off center - it will still cut down on lens flare.

If your lens rotates (meaning it does not have internal focus) you'd be better off with a solid round lens hood versus the petal type which are better for internal focus lenses that do *not* rotate. That being said, I'm not really sure how much it matters.

what about it? you think having the corners darkened when you don't want them to be is ok? i don't. that's what happens if the petals aren't aligned straight up and down - at least that's what i've been reading.
Have you actually HAD this issue? Vignetting is something that *may* happen depending on the focal length of the lens and the length of lens hood itself. Take some test shots with your lens at it's widest focal length, lens hood installed, and see if it's even an issue. It's not something that pops up sporadically. It's either going to happen, or it isn't.

How come this thread went down hill from a simple lens hood question, to one member calling out another because of his answer? It is not what I expected to see here at all.

If you're referring to my post, I'm not feeling called out... I think the OP is just unfamiliar with his new accessory and is possibly crossing a bridge he hasn't come to yet. If my, "What about it?" post sounded a little snarky I apologize and will say in my own defense "No snark intended!" Sometimes I think I come off as being sarcastic when, in my own mind, I'm just being frank.

The correct Nikon hood for the 18-55mm Nikkor is the HB-45.
thx.. i bought mine as part of a kit so i didn't have much choice. they said it was compatible with the D5100 but apparently only as far as the 52mm diameter is concerned. i'm thinking that removable gear thing might be the key to getting it to work right. not sure.
