Indoor flower photo

First my disclaimer...I am new to photography and this is the first picture I have posted for evaluation.

I'd like some honest feedback from some of the amazingly talented folks on this site. I'm hoping to hear what I'm doing right so far and of course where I need to improve (be it composition, technique, etc). Hopefully I can get this photo uploaded from my iPad correctly. Thanks in advance.

Disclaimer. I'm not an amazingly talented folk, but I do love flower photography.

The composition would be great if you didn't cut the bottom peddle off.
Also try to shoot this photo at a larger aperture (smaller F/number) to get a bit more blur (bokeh) on the background.
It will make your subject stand out a little more.

Blacktop, I would disagree on your talent. I think you underestimate your skills. Thanks for the advice, I didn't even notice that I had cut off one of the petals! I am limited somewhat with aperture settings since this was the kit lens (18-55). I plan to purchase a nice prime lens (looking at a 50mm 1.8) in the next few days. This brings up a question though....when I am able to narrow down my depth of field more with a wider aperture, how do I choose a good focus point? I know with people and animals, I should focus on the eyes, but what about flowers and such?

On one hand the background strips adds the blue/grey contrast and makes it interesting, and on the other its taking my eyes straight to it to the point I want to move the flower away to see it. seems a bit busy. also the main flower in the shot doesnt seem like its with the other fellas. like hes playing by himself. it doesnt look like a group bouquet shot. and true a wider aperture would be better. the potential is there though. just needs a few tweaks. im a hate fan of heavy PS editing though. sorry.

Thanks Rocketman, I see what you're saying about the composition. Would you as a photographer adjust the bouquet or just shoot what's there from different angles? And the PS editing I'm learning too and I'm probably very heavy handed to an expert eye. I don't really know what I'm doing yet so I'm just adjusting things that please me. It's all a learning process but I'm having fun and that's what counts!

A side note about post processing.
It is very easy to go overboard with things like saturation, sharpening , contrast and such.
I was guilty of this before and still somewhat guilty of it now.
Although since I'm getting more practice at it, I'm getting better at refraining from moving those sliders too much to the right.:)

Turning things down a bit will often highlight other things.
