Any suggestion ? I'm looking for a ebay bargain ! I am not sure If I will use this lens often so a used lens makes sense , in terms of price . My budget is $1000. anyone have any suggestions ?

OR get a 300 mm F4 plenty sharp,, well sharper than 2.9,, lighter, and on a tele,, 2.8 less value anyway. save the 2.8 for wode angle lens.

Look for third party manual focus or Nikon manual focus in not so good condition. That's the only way to get one for $1000.

It seems to me making sacrifices is something most non pros have to do. Either to wait and save a ton of money to buy the leading lenses one at a time over years maybe. Or to lower our desires to lenses a little less impressive and much more affordable. For me I made the choice to get good quality as I could sacrificing af when needed saving a ton of money, because otherwise I'd never get much of a variety of lenses. But it sounds like you aren't as limited financially as I am. So getting higher end lenses maybe within your reach. But I wouldn't buy high a high end lens that I didn't have a plan for, and intended to use a lot. :)

I bought a 300mm that fit into my budget. Well stretched my budget some but was doable. Lol :)
My goal is to move up in cameras. To do my saving for one big jump to the D800, keeping my D3100 as my secondary. This is I believe the best that I can do, and the best for my photographic needs as I improve. :)
