Ikan VH8 monitor and D800.

Hi,
I bought the monitor to give me the option to view my live view from above whilst taking landscapes and bird photography.

It works well but every time I take an image the camera's live view clicks off and I have to reset it. This means I can only take one picture at a time.

Does anyone know the solution to this problem please ?

It's hooked up through the HDMI port, right?

Try turning the "Live view on-screen display" off under the HDMI > Advanced settings.

oh and if that doesn't work try settings the "Monitor off delay" to no limit - Timers/AE lock > Monitor off delay > Live view > No limit

Hi John,
Thanks for your replies but unfortunately they do not solve the problem............... I remember seeing somewhere in my quest for an answer that it is only possible with a D4.
The problem with the D800 is ... Quote:- You can’t take multiple pictures in live view without waiting for the card to stop writing. It’s very annoying when you’re seeing a great moment in front of you, mashing the shutter button, and nothing at all is happening because the camera is taking 3 seconds to write a single image to the card. There is no logical reason for this. Why doesn’t it use the same buffer capabilities as when you shoot “normally” using the viewfinder? The D800 is an incredibly responsive camera, except when in liveview mode when it turns into a total sloth.
For video the external VH8 is brilliant and also for taking low level stills ( no need to lay down on the ground )
I was hoping to use it for 'Birds in flight' with tripod and gimbal mount, but with the current problem it is impossible. I am going to try attaching a mini camcorder to view through the viewfinder and into the Ikan monitor.
I will update whether I am successful.

Thanks again,
Patrick.

SUCCESS.............

Ok, I bought a
[h=1]Aiptek PenCam Trio HD Camcorder 720p HD[/h]and it works brilliantly, came with HDMI cable.

I will post a pic. of the setup later.

Cheers,

Patrick.

Glad to hear that worked out.

I read this on flickr regarding live view and how it works:
At the start of the Live View mode the camera processes enter synchronized and it then cycles the shutter open. Here tripping the shutter does not start the regular camera sequence but a special one that starts with closing the shutter. On completion it needs to reenter Liveview but must synchronize processes back to the normal state to do so.

Thus after a shutter trip the memory save component must clear the picture frame buffer to allow the camera to reenter Liveview mode and open the shutter. These camera processes happen in foreground and one must wait (you can see why). Basically re-entering Liveview works the same as entering it from any operational point for the camera.

For me the memory card write speed does makes a difference for this function. A faster memory write speed will cycle back to the start of Liveview faster. I see different memory LED activity times.

When I use bracketing I see a longer delay as it clears the deeper shot buffer. If I use Lexar P 1000x instead of SanDisk Ultra II then I see an improvement in the cycle time for NEF. Same thing if I save JPG instead of NEF. I also can see the picture process time and shutter cycle delays. Presumably this behavior also causes the observed hour glass time differences .
