Im going with James on this one for the most part. In the first pic, the biggest issue I have is the angle it was shot at. It just seems weird for me. I think some things just look better coming from the left side...(why, i have no idea, probably because we read from left to right, therefore our eyes want to move in that direction naturally or some crock like that LOL) The black background can work in some instances, but I feel in this case, it works in a negative way. Its actually helping point out the flaws because you have nothing else to look at. The flower itself lacks color and vibrance (just the flower you chose) and does seem a bit over exposed, and the interesting part is that the stem seems under exposed, yet overexposed at the same time...kind of looks like the on board flash was used? I think if you were to balance those 2 things out, and add a little background, you might be in business on this one. The second pic is much better. Better color, better composition (though I agree with James here, its not great, but better than the first). Try the rule of thirds. You mention you want to try different things? Get that subject out of the center! A recrop could save this one...that little dab of red in the upper left is distracting. Either have just 1 flower, or multiple flowers in the background...not 1 flower and part of another. It bounces the eyes around. As James said also...it is a little soft...personally, I like them crisp...BUT some like them a bit on the soft side. Its not enough to make me NOT like this photo. Hope some of this helps.
