For walking around type shooting my favorite all-purpose lens is the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G and think that might serve you better than a big zoon at a car show. Then too, if you're in the market for a good prime, I'd tell you to look at either the 35mm f/1.8G, the 85mm f/1.8G or both. They'll both be leaps and bounds better than the 18-55mm.But again, these are just suggestions...
