i have a dilemma, had my camera with my kit lens 18-55 for around 8-9 months now and have been using it up the local nature reserve, and i am a car enthusiast and have taken it to 5-6 car shows, and various days out but now i am after abit if zoom, i have roughly £350 to spend, now then heres the ultimatum, do i buy a 70-300 afs vr telephoto lens or do i buy a 55-300 afs vr and a prime lens???? Any help or suggestions are all welcome many thanks for reading

Well there's no real right or wrong answer here...

For wildlife I'd have to suggest the 70-300mm f/4-5.6G simply because of the extra reach.

For walking around type shooting my favorite all-purpose lens is the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G and think that might serve you better than a big zoon at a car show. Then too, if you're in the market for a good prime, I'd tell you to look at either the 35mm f/1.8G, the 85mm f/1.8G or both. They'll both be leaps and bounds better than the 18-55mm.

But again, these are just suggestions... The reason the question keeps coming up is because there is no single "correct" answer and never will be.

I have the 18-105, the 35 1.8 and access to a 70-300 whenever I need it and I must say that it cover 99% of what I shoot, which is mainly my daughters soccer and snowboarding events. I think if I was shooting still wildlife (as opposed to birds flying, fish jumping etc) I would be fine with the 55-300 as I tried it and found it to be quite comparable with the 70-300 (remember though I am strictly a "hobbyist") but I found the 70-300 quicker and faster on the focus and a bit sharper/quicker on the longer end of the zoom when taking action shots. The 18-105 is on my camera 95% of the time and I love its versatility and quality combo. WHichever you choose to buy, remember to look for refurbished lenses from reputable dealers for good deals. Also, X-mas is coming soon and Santa may want to reward you......

Thanks for the reply, so now i have another dilemma, what you both have said makes great sense, to buy a 18-105mm i shall now look about purchasing either a secondhand or new lense, and to accompany this i this i will opt for the 55-300 just so i have that range i have been looking for. Many thanks for your input :)
