I got my wife a DSLR "starter kit" for our anniversary

My wife has always had a casual interest in photography. The first "starter" camera I got her was a Nikkormat FT3 (which I still have and love) with a Series E 36-72mm f/3.5 (which I got rid of about 5 years ago). Up until now she has been using the old Nikon D5700, which as point and shoots go, is not bad, but it is rather limited in its scope.

So I put together a DSLR "starter kit" for her consisting of the following:

D300 with MB-D10
18-55mm AF VR
55-200 AF VR
Sunpak dedicated flash for Nikon

It will give her lots of room to grow as she gets more into it and she can always use my AIS Nikkors as well

I often use the exact kit for walkarounds. D300 and the 2 VR kit lenses. Lightweight and surprisingly capable of brilliant results in bright light. The only weakness I find is anything over ISO 800 gets pretty yukky fast.

From my experience your wife will become very serious about her images once she sees the early results! Those lenses are sharp, sharp, sharp and of course the D300 is pro gear. The MB-D10 is fantastic for handling but adds a lot of weight. The D300 battery life off the single onboard battery is limitless unlike the D200 and other cams. She might find herself leaving it at home for walkarounds.

Well played indeed!

STM...I can send you a Setup Guide for your wife's D300 if you're interested. It's used to setup the 4 banks in the camera. PM me your email address and I'll send it off to you. It's in PDF format....can't send it through here, unfortunately.
