I can be a bit slow at times

Been playing with my old sigma 135-400 on the D5100 today and didn't enjoy it because of the lack of compatibility,to be honest the main thing was no autofocus, this set me thinking the sigma was used a lot at 400mm on the D70 so say 6million pixels if i used the complete image.
I am giving serious thought to the Nikon 70-300 af-s vr ect lens, now using this at 300mm on my new camera if i use only 50% of the image my mind tells me i will most likley end up with a better quality image, due to more pixels and a lens which is a lot newer design and if i use more than the 50% i gain even more and this is with a shorter focal length lens.

So am i being slow, thick or have i got it right you can be honest if its thick.

I've owned both, the sigma had nice reach, but the manual focus meant I only ever used it 3 times, all for attempted moon shots... I sent it back to the seller and stuck with my 70-300 VR AF-S... I just love that lens!
