The D7000 is "the replacement / upgrade" to the D90, and would be a better move I think. The 3100 has a newer sensor and technology than the D90, I think you be going backwards in that department, but in Nikons line up the D90 WOULD be listed as a better camera so you would be going forward in that department but just moving up the list that's all. Other posters have mentioned D300, it basically the same as the D90 goes when it comes down to the sensor. The difference is a alloy body and more bells and whistles then the D90. I also like to point out that the D300 does not have any auto modes except "P" mode so if you're an "Auto" shooter beware. The D7000 and the D90 on the other hand has many auto modes to use. I have used the D90 for two years now and I am very happy with it, however at the time I bought it there were some issues with the D7000 that were not worked out yet and I stayed away for it. Another thing to think about, there is "possible" long awaited upgrade coming in the DX line. You might want to wait it out and save up and see what happens like I am. If I were you and wanted to make a move right now, I would go with the D7000 over the D90.
