How to hold super zoom

Well I've got my very first, the Nikkor 200-500 plus a nice carbon tripod/monopod. But, several have said they hold it using good Black Rapid strap....which I have too. Question: using the strap only, do you fix to camera or zoom lens foot? Silly question but I'm a newbie

Not sure about what the 200-300 is, but its pretty much hand hold or tripod mount. Now, my 70-200mm and 500mm have more than one thread in the foot, and its possible to use a screw thread for each. However, i find if i do that one is always unbalanced

Congrats Patrick. Attach it to the lens. Attaching it to the camera will put stress on the camera/lens connection (mount). Personally, I think it's too big to be dangling around on a strap.

I agree with @singlerosa. I attach my BlackRapid strap to the 200-500's tripod foot. At the same time, I'm using the strap more as a tether, and I don't let go of the camera body. The strap is supporting the weight, but I don't let the camera dangle.

For my big lens, I have a longer strap attached to the usual 2 camera lugs but the camera is never supported by the strap, the strap is for 'just in case'. I'm either holding the camera or I hook the tripod foot over my belt. The strap is just the right length to keep the camera from going anywhere if something goes wrong, but my belt takes all the weight. The camera stays close and does not swing around. I haven't tried walking for miles like this, but its good for short walks or if I'm just standing around waiting for birds.

I have the D750 and the Tamron 150-600. My strap is connected to the Lens foot. I also use that foot as a handle to carry the camera/lens when walking around. If I do need two hands for a minute I can let go and let it dangle but I try not to let that happen to often.

Last week I tried using a gimbal on a monopod and really enjoyed that combination. I had a cheep monopod and the connection between the head and monopod was week so I replaced the monopod with a Manfrotto yesterday. Going to go try it out in a few minutes.

I'm with Singlerosa, support from the lens to put less stress on the joint. ( I also dont like the dangling and swinging around , so I hook the foot -inverted- into a shoulder strap bandolier style , and leave the neck strap on ,,just so it doesnt pivot at the foot and fall off .. it does look awkward but I find it very comfortable and secure and can take my hands off it to stroll empty handed)

I normally just carry the thing by the handle. (some people call it a tripod collar, I call it a handle).

The only time I use a strap is when I'm at the meet and greet because those guys make fun of me if I don't.:playful:
