How much is too much?

Well the gear would be safe in the car trunk but keep in mind how hot Vegas is, for example. You are looking at a high of 35 C next week, so it isn't really so good to keep the gear in the truck for too long, unless the car is in a covered garage perhaps. But even then. Also keep in mind that airlines consider any extra bag like the one for your 70-200 as an additional carry-on item. Keep the things you carry to a bare minimum in terms of number like one main bag then a very small item (purse, etc.). Again, double check the airline regulations. They can be very difficult to deal with if they are sticking to the letter of their regulations and have a full flight with very little extra space.

I think sharing a DSLR would only strengthen a relationship, LOL. But what are the odds of one of your cameras completely failing? But it is funny to see your relationship dynamic. It reminds me of when I first got my D700 and my wife wanted to use it and I said no way and she said "what is yours is ours and so its mine too!" So I got her a D7000 so she wouldn't bug me to use my camera. Cameras are a very personal thing, ;). But it would be funny to see you two at the rim of the Grand Canyon fighting over which lens you can use, hehe. And as far as I'm concerned, any trip with the wife is a test of the marriage, hahah.

One other thing to consider. What if, on your trip, EVERYTHING gets stolen? Do you have insurance? But more importantly, when you get home, what if your extra D7100 is sitting there safe and sound ready to be used to get you through that difficult period of loss? Same holds true for the odd lens or two...

Yes we have insurance for the trip. I was thinking of undercover parking if I put the gear in it.

I entered into tough negotiations with my wife tonight about reducing our kit inventory. After lengthy discussions it looks like we are taking everything :) This is a big trip for us and I doubt if we will go back anytime soon so it seems logical to take the right gear. You could say that we only bought it for when we want great results so surely this is such an occasion.

Perhaps everybody would like to open bets now regarding how much we use each lens. I think my revised estimate is 24-120 98% of the time. 16-35 1% and misc 1%. I will check when I get back.

Following my failed downsizing negotiations with my wife last night, I went to the airport (only 10 mins from home) tonight to confirm that my bag fits the sizing cage they have. The Vertex AW300 is an exact fit as I expected, and it's a really big bag. All I can say is that I'm glad the Tamron 150-600 was late out or I wouldn't be able to pick the bag up.

The only thing I need to consider is security and I've got a few thoughts on that.

FYI - If worried about security of your gear, buy yourself a used diaper bag and use it to transport your camera gear. Unlike high-end camera bags, no one ever breaks into cars to steal diaper bags.

I like your thinking Dave. I also wondered about putting any lenses that won't fit in the safe in a locked hard suitcase rather than camera bag whilst in the hotel room as I don't intend carrying everything. I thought this may be less obvious.

You might be able to secure a locked hard suitcase to something in the hotel room.

Some hotels do have larger lock boxes in a closet or other out of site location.

When I traveled with $20,000+ in small equipment (similar in size) I installed a large lock box in the trunk (boot) of the car anchored to the spare tire bolt in the floor of the trunk. The gear could have been easily replaced. The security was really against the inconvenience and delay it would have created had something walked off.

One thing to keep in mind. If any of your travel within the US is by a regional jet (built by Embraer or Canadair ) be aware that what is considered carry-on on a regular jet may have to be gate checked on a regional jet. If you are using a rental car for all of your travels within the US then no worries.

Great shots of Vegas, it gives me something to aim at. The second body is in case either my D800 or her D7100 fail, as we are away for three weeks taking lots of pictures. If we had to share for that time it may result in a divorce. Like others have said the 70-200 doesn't make the list so this has me thinking.

Interesting what you say about hotel security. I do wonder if the gear is safer locked in the trunk of the car?

The problem with leaving equipment in the car is the heat in the west. It may top 100* at Bryce and Vegas, and inside your car, it may hit 140*f. Believe me, I lived in St. George, Utah for a while. It got so hot, it melted the glue that held my rear view mirror to the windshield. Think of all that plastic in the heat! Be careful....and do Grand Canyon too.....3 or 4 hour ride from Vegas to the south rim. Enjoy your trip.

I've heard better reports from the North Rim, which might be even closer coming down from Bryce Canyon instead of over from Vegas. It's been a few years since I made that trip (2004), but the ride from the North Rim up past Bryce Canyon and over to Torrey Utah is easily one of my favorites.

Either way, I'm jealous. If I wasn't headed out on my own vacation, I'd be even more jealous. :D
