Okay--you might think this is a silly question, but here goes. How wide should a tripod quick release plate be to ensure it won't need to be shimmed (due to its being slightly loose)? After reading some reviews of tripods, I noticed one that had a quick release plate that was @ 1" to 1-1/4" square, and the reviewer said he had to shim the plate to prevent a slight wobble. In comparison, my Manfrotto quick release plate is hexagonal and is larger in diameter, and I've never had any problems. Has anyone run into loose quick release plates when they are a small size? And does size matter if the equipment is heavy? I'm specifically thinking of my heaviest which is a D600 with a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. Do you consider the size of the plate when you buy a tripod head? I'm specifically looking into ball heads. Can you tell me the approximate widest diameter of the quick release plate you use? Are newer tripod heads using smaller quick release plates? It is difficult to tell the diameter of the quick release plates when looking for info online. Thanks for any help and information! :) EDIT: the Manfrotto tripod from BJ's Wholesale Club that I mentioned in another thread had a really small plate--@ 1-1/8" square, and that's the one where a reviewer said the plate was slightly loose.
