I used my D40X for 3-4 years. It was a fine camera and it never faltered. About a month ago, I got the bug for a new upgraded camera. I was really interested in the Canon T3i. After I did my fair share of research, I found that the Nikon D5100 was a better choice. I started looking for a good deal on the D5100 when a local Craigslist turned up a NIB D3100 kit for $425. That was a very good deal and I rationalized the purchase over the D5100. As it turned out, I bought the new D3100 for only $375. (Some of this story was related in the D3100 forum.) I was able to sell my D40X for $375 on eBay, so the entire deal for the D3100 was a wash. I’ve been using my D3100 quite a bit, and after finding my way to Nikonites, I learned about the possibilities of more serious fun-photography (particularly HDR). I decided I wanted the D5100 after all. So, I bought a factory refurbished D5100 body for $449. I already have Nikon 35mm and a 55-200mm lenses (besides the D3100 kit lens). I think I’ll be getting an 18-55mm later. My LNIB D3100 kit is for sale on eBay and I priced it to pay for my D5100 body. Hopefully, another wash. That would equate to moving from a D40X to a D5100 for the cost of the kit lens. Whew! When does this all end? D7000? D800? You know what? I’m really enjoying the whole thing, so it doesn’t really matter. Thanks Nikonites for my new addiction.
