As for portraits.......yes, it can be used for that, but a better lens would be the 50mm f/1.8, which is the equivalent of a 75mm lens on a full frame (FX) camera.The fact that it's an f/1.8 lens means that it lets in more light at a fixed aperture, thereby giving it less dof and sharper images in low light conditions.
