Ok, I'm a bit of a bag junky with quite a few different versions of bags. Lowepro Computrekker, Slingshot 200, Crumpler $6M home, + others. Now I have the need for another bag. I want a small shoulder bag that will house my D700 with 24-84 VR on + hold a 50/1.8G or 35/2. That's all it really needs to hold. I want it for when I go to restaurants with family and friends or similar. It needs to be as small as possible and discreet in that I don't want it to look to much like a camera bag. Just a trendy "man bag". Any suggestions please?

Vanguard uprise messenger 38. Its real sturdy and a nice size. It fits my d600 with room left. You can unzip the side to expand it.

We are clearly of similar minds... But jeeze man you gotta dump the zoom. I have a huge number of bags... Have been on a mission for perfection. Bag that is very close to perfect is The Bare Bones Bag, Evolution. I use it for the. Symphony, Plays, and other events when I must be discrete. It will fit the D 700, actually it may fit the zoom and your lenses... But it is gonna be like a small bag of rocks. I also carry my sun glasses, mini iPad, check book, and fountain pens.
Consider going a step further. I bought a Fuji XE-1 with a 18 - 50mm zoom and 35mm f 1.4. I'll get a 14mm soon. Anyway, it is light and the APS-C sensor is really good in low light ( for a APS-C) sensor! This is really a mall discrete system. I would say equivalent or better IQ and low light than the D700 (I have a D700 and D800), probably it is better on both accounts. Really outstanding system.
Also, I got a small Frost River Shoulder Bag, a camera insert, and had Frost River add a handle, it is nt much bigger than the BBB but easily fits a full sized IPad. Would fit your rig I think, but is a bit outdoorsy, depending on you lifestyle.
I got a few really expensive ones, but they are boxy or just big. JD

A few months ago I scored on the greatest camera bag. It's a circa 1980's Fotima canvas shoulder camera bag. It has a large main pocket that holds my camera and three lenses (camera w/ lens on and two stowed in their own little squared off area) and has a large pocket in the front to hold all your goodies and two on the sides and a narrow on on the back. If I weren't so lazy I'd take a photo of it and show you. I love that it's made of good ol' fashioned canvas I priced a modern version of this bag with the same inside dimensions and the cheapest I could find it for was $160 and closer to $200 on average and they're made of a funky meltable plastic material. And the best part is that it cost me $20 on Craigslist (and when I pulled out the dividers I found a 55mm CP buried in there).
The moral of this story is that if you don't mind getting a bag made for cameras back in the 80's or 90's that doesn't have a fancy name, you can save a ton of cash and protect your stuff as good, if not better than modern bags.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Bit of a DOH moment when i read the replies. I'm going with Horo Fish's suggestion of a smaller Crumpler Home. Probably a $4M.
I gotta say, JDFlood your suggestion was OUT THERE!! I ask for suggestions for a small bag and you come up with buy a XE-1 + lenses!! That's so out there I got a real good chuckle. Thanks for the laugh
