Help me build a "to buy" list

Ok, I am looking around on what to buy next for my d40.

First off, I plan on getting a new camera later down the road, but want the lenses or a like to be interchangeable. Being as I am staying with Nikon, it should be to hard.

Here is my current list of lenses I have.

Sigma 28-80 f3.5-5.6 minizoom macro
Quantary NF AF 1:3.5-5.6 f = 28-80mm
Nikkor AF-S 35mm 1:1.8G
Nikon Series E 70-210mm F/4.0
Then obviously the D40 body.

This list isn't only for lenses, I am open to other things as well. I am just at a loss on what to get next.

My photography style is all around. I do macro to long-long distance.

Any suggestions?

Shoot totally misread...

Hmm, I honestly think you're in good shape. Probably a list of- what to and not to bring with you on short trips.

And all of these will work on all bodies, so no worries there.

D7000 or a FF D600....You might want to look at prime some lens, like 20mm..28mm..35mm..50mm..85mm..100mm..

If you are thinking FX buy your lens to suit...Buy once buy right...You can pick up some very good older lens like the 28-70mm F2.8...80-200mm F2.8 second hand

One thing I am looking into is a lens for long range. I do wildlife photography on the side for fun, and i miss out on some beautiful shots due to their range being 60m -160m what kind of zoom would I need to achieve that?

I got a calendar here of whitetail deer were the photographer used a D300 and all of the shots look like you're right beside it, longest being 180m out.

I have a older 300mm F4 that I use with my D300...In my gallery are some surfing shots taken with this combo....

I would suggest a used D300 as a possible stepping stone from the D40x, a larger camera but awesome features, and would keep the full range of lens available for you.

I second the 300 F4 lens, with a 1.4 tele converter.

The 70-210 is actually a fine lens. one would say classic.

for fun find a 100 mm series E lens,, a gem.

I personaly love my 200 mm F4 lens, small sharp.

you can spend a small fortune on a handful of modern lens, or cherry pick some old classics.

and soon,, who knows, maybe the D700s will drop to a reasonable used price range (but not yet).

Any suggestions on a tele converter?

I have been picking through junk to find that "diamond in the rough". I don't got the cash to boot that is required for some of these lenses I would love to get my hands on (i.e. 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM).

60 to 100m approximately...There was some cropping done to the images as well..

I figured as much, but none-the-less beautiful shots, with great quality.

I think an 85 or 100 or 135 faster medium telephoto would be good. I agree on the prime longer telephoto. Primes rule! ;) I've got a prime on the way myself.....

Hey there Clix ... I agree with STMV ... I'd go for D300 because of its functions, specs and build.
When you go for D40, you'll find its functions are limited. Because of that you may want to upgrade, later on. And that would means another pocket burn.
As for lens, AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 VR can do justice. At 70mm, it can produce nice portrait images. Its an FX lens too ... :)

I currently have a D40. I plan on upgrading later down the road, mainly just looking for additions for it that with be compatible with another Nikon down the road.
