I'm completely new to dslr photography and don't need the latest and greatest of cameras. I just bought a new d5100 with kit lens for $550 but now I am thinking about it again seeing the local classifieds.

For example, a d80 and quarantay 18-200mm and nikon 70-300mm all for only $400. Or a d80 with 18-135mm for only $275. I am realizing that glass is so much more important than the body to a certain point and I am on a very strict budget, so there isn't any more room for more lenses with he d5100. Any thoughts? I completely understand that the d5100 is a much more advanced camera than the d80 but it's probably more camera than I could use for now.

You bought a new D5100 kit....OK you have 12 months warranty with it this is great..

The D80 might be 8 years old without warranty...One little hic cup can get rid of a fare few dollars...

A couple of things to think about...

I'd stick with the D5100. You should spend quite a while getting used to the camera before you go buying glass, IMO.

The D5100 offers an articulating screen, faster shooting, higher ISO, slightly smaller and lighter, Live View, and lower noise at high ISO. The D80 offers a built-in motor and a little bit larger viewfinder.

For my money stick with the D5100 and kit lens if it is the 18-55 there not to much wrong with that set up. Ask yourself why are people selling their D80's As pedroj said if you have have trouble with an old D80 you could be up for big bucks.in repairs.

I've had both of those bodies and the d5100 blows it away as far as high ISO performance and overall quality of the image. I'd recommend the 35mm 1.8 for your d5100. It brings the camera to life and you won't regret it as the lens is very cheap for what you get!

My previous was the D80. I'd thought about the D90, but when the D5100 arrived I didn't need to think about it. I've been practising this dark art for 4 years, and I'm still learning with the D5100 which I've had for 18 months now ...

So if you're cup goosing, I'd recommend the D5100

I like D5100, even D90 seems big, heavy, old for beginner. I think you can upgrade the body to pro 1-2 years later without losing much. You can gift your existing camera to your relative at that time too, if prices dropped too low

Current sensor technology, alone, is worth the extra expenditure. That is not saying that the D80 suffers from poor image quality.

The fact that the D5100 is equipped with the same sensor as the D7000 seals the deal in my opinion.

Stick with the D5100 and enjoy it.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm working hard to save for the 35mm f1.8 and I'm keeping the d5100! I did, however, find what seems to be a real deal of a d80, 18-135 af-s and 70-300mm af-s vr with all accessories, and flash unit, and filters, etc for only $500, so I'm considering buying the package and selling everything but the 70-300. Or maybe resell it all and have enough for the 35mm.
