In Manual it says F - -
When you half press the shoot button and look through the viewfinder you read:
'lo F - -' on the left and '[r13]' on the right.
When you switch back to Auto you read:
'F - -' and 'ISO AUTO [r13] and (i)'
When you press (i) it says on the screen:
'Check lens. Non CPU lenses can be used in manual mode only'
The lens currently attached to the camera is
NIKON DX VR: AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII.

As I added to my previous reply, it is the lens connection. Either it isn't attached properly or the pin is stuck.

I just reproduced the problem with my D3300 and the same lens but when I click the lens back correctly, it is gone.

I'm not sure what you can do but I'd try pushing the release, turn the lens a couple of degrees and then click it back in and repeat that a couple of times. You can also try using some mild force to turn it further into the closed direction. Don't be too rough. You can even leave the cam on during. Then you can check if it has any effect.

Something isn't making contact and since it is with both lenses, it has to be the cam.

If you rather not risk it, I'd go back to the dealer and explain to him what's going on.

Edit: I pushed some paper between the pin you see on the cam's lens ring and the lens while attaching. Then it no longer clicks but mine works nevertheless so that pin isn't the problem. It only locks the lens to prevent involuntary removal or turning.

Thanks J-See. I appreciate your help. It is frustrating as the lens is connected to the camera correctly. We have done as you suggested and released and clicked back a few times - it is clicked in and the pin is working correctly and the little 'balls' on the lens which make contact are not stuck or anything.
There is a little 'tab' on the inside of the lens which is movable and there is another one on the inside of the camera where the lens connects and it also is moving fine. I don't know what else it could be.
We have done the factory reset. I'm not sure what to do next.
We purchased online so I guess getting anyone to look at it is going to be an issue.
Thanks for your help.

Btw, the new cam should be covered for one year so if you got the paperwork, having bought it online makes no difference. You should be able to go to any dealer nearby and through them, have Nikon fix it.

I can't check more on my D3300 without taking it apart but noticed that besides the contact points, there are three contact plates that are pushed upward when the lens is attached. If you check inside the lens ring on the cam you should see them. You can check if they all three look the same, are not damaged or if nothing is stuck in between. Both lenses also should have the plastic parts that slide below them.

And with this ends the little knowledge I have. If those look fine, you'll have to check in with someone that knows the technical part deeper inside the cam.

It can be something very simple but you have to know what. It's bad enough when this happens to any of us but it's really unlucky it has to happen to your kid's present.

Hi Leanne,

from which store did you purchase it online and when? If you have purchased through a reputable store online there is almost certainly the possibility to send the camera back either for:

a - a full refund
b - a replacement

go onto the website where you purchased and check their returns policy.
