I'm a new guy. Just purchased a kenco 1.4 converter. Doesn't seem to work auto focus on my tamron 150-600 lens. Is it not compatible

It may not be compatible. But we don't know which Kenco 1.4x teleconverter you bought (there are 2) and what Nikon body you are attaching to. That is a factor also. Check this chart from Kenco's web site. Looks to me like the basic version won't autofocus with hardly any DSLR/lens combo. I would not buy one of those.
