Hello from Japan!

Hello everyone. Name is Ryan. Currently in Japan as I am serving in the US Navy. Originally from Indiana.

Bought a Nikon D5100 for myself and wife for Christmas 2011. Hadn't really used it a whole lot with the steep learning curve going from a point and shoot and iphones, lol.

Work in an IT shop part time and 2 of the guys there are photographers by hobby, one part-time semi-pro, but they are Canon guys... I guess that's a no-no? Haha.

Anyway, they kinda got me interested in learning how to use my camera again, so it's my new obsession. Bought a few books (downloaded.. shhh!) to help me learn the lingo and how everything works. Trying to learn to shoot in Aperture mode and Manual Mode.. and slowly getting better.

Got a couple new lenses on the way from flea-bay... can't wait to try them out.

Glad to be here, hope to learn a lot from you experienced guys.. and ooh and ahh over your awesome pictures.

Welcome Ryan and again, thanks for your service.

Your friends will be of great benefit in learning the basics (ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed). Those things remain a constant from one camera to the next. That will make learning the controls easier.

Hi Ryan - it looks like we are both stationed on the same base. Welcome to the forum and stay dry.

Question for you and Ryan: are you guys allowed to post pics of the base installations? Ships? Would be interesting to see if you could. Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to the forum. The D5100 is a great camera. I know you will enjoy it. Below this post in my signature you will see some great links for the D5100. They are a great place to start. Ask questions and post pictures.

I'm not sure if it is allowed to be honest. They sometimes let Japanese civilians on base, and they bring cameras... so I'm not sure. It's probably frowned upon, but I will probably try to get some pictures of them anyway, haha. Plus you can see them from a short distance outside of base. There is a park along the water just across from the shipyard that is outside the gates.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I already learned something from this forum... how to turn on HDR mode. I just set it to the function button for quick access. Now to get something cool to try it out on.

I was looking at some of the pictures and saw some pretty awesome ones.. especially one of a train on here. I was gonna e-mail it to my brother to use as a background... he works for the railroad back in Indiana, of course, with permission from the owner of the picture.

When my son was in Iraq he shot all the time but on his next deployment to Afghanistan he was imbedded with a Special Forces unit and he was not even allowed to have his camera with him.
