Have a Tokina 12-24 on its way!

Howdy... I assume you have looked through the thread a but.. and have seen some of my photos with it..

Lets see if I can cover it all...

Wise Purchase?? To me yes!! Looking at the ad, it looks just like mine. I paid 300 new for mine off ebay but that has been while back... used only once or twice, in as new... 275 seems fair.. Obviously take your camera and try it.. It should focus fine on your 7000 but if you have another camera (I have a 5100) it may only be in manual focus.

Ted got his first, and turned me on to the 12-24. (I bought mine from the same guy he did) What about the 11-16?? That is what I really wanted but also could not afford it. This was affordable to me and the quality of images has met with both mine and Ted's need. Reviews will likely give a nod to the 11-16 but for me, this meets my needs and more..

Couple thoughts beyond image... I loose a mm (11-12) but gain on the other end (24-16) so to me it is actually a little more versatile due to the increased range, (my opinion).

I like it, it is very good general UW for my needs... No regrets... if they were both the same price, I would have gone 11-16 but I do not see enough gain for the price difference For ME

Understand, you need to google wide angle and learn abit about HOW to use these lens... things can be different as to your composition!! :) (fun once you learn!)

Good Luck!

Thanks Pat for the helpful advice...as always! ;)

I'm still very undecided regarding this sale.
I contacted seller and there is another buyer interested for the $300 asking price.
I might just let this one go...

Since my funds are extremely tight and my situation regarding being "between jobs" at this moment, has me relying on my current sale of my D3100 on Craigslist.
Should I sell my D3100 to buy more glass for the D7000 appetite or keep it for a second body?

My current lenses all work with both, except for the AF on the Nikon 50mm f1.8D on the D3100...not really a problem.

Help...Decisions...decisions???

Hey, always glad to help... If money is tight and you do not have a direct "immediate" need, waiting may be best. I am sure other "deals" will surface and maybe the timing will be better...

You have to determine if you need more glass... in looking at your sig, you have a pretty good coverage. What do you feel you are lacking?? I ma not sure how much you will get for the 3100 today. I am a person who believes in backups for my passions.. I kept my 5100 when I got my 7100. I still use on occasion.. obviously my 7100 is prime..

If I am taking pics for collections on a tabletop.. I will set up the 5100 and leave it all set... leaving my 7100 free for traveling.. I will also mount my 300 on the 5100 in the summer... using it outside on the deck watching for planes and birds!!:) I have also grabbed the 5100 when I need to travel light! Heaven forbid if my 7100 has to go to the "hospital", but at least I can keep shooting!! I have a spare motorcysle too! :)

I was looking for coverage on the "w-i-d-e-s-i-d-e", since I'm pretty covered from 18-300mm (cropped).
Lost the chance to pick up the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for under $300 on Craigslist and felt that I didn't want to be in that position with this 12-24mm.

At this time, I don't have a "need" to get this lens, but would it be nice.

Keeping the D3100 is causing me to second guess my decision on selling it...same reasons for you to keep the D5100.
Here is my listing of my D3100:
Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera w/ Battery Grip

Seller has notified me that other sale has fell through and has offered me the chance to buy for the offered price of $275...hmmmm?

Tough descisions... you have to decide what things are worth to you.. :) Not always easy... I would likely be keeping the 3100 for what you can get .. (I am not rich but its value as a backup would sway me...)

I would also likely grab the 12-24 (I actually already did) and if I had to sell my camera (5100) to get it, I probably would have... cuz I wanted that Extra Wide..

My descisions and values may not match yours... but you got my 2 cents worth! :)

Good luck and keep us posted..

I finally decided to take the jump and bought the Tokina 12-24mm...not from the previous seller, but another seller who went full frame (D800e).
I'm also adding a Nikon AF-S 40mm Micro to the mix...both in new condition with filters.
We were supposed to meet today, but due to the snow we received he will be shipping them out tomorrow via Fed Ex overnight.
Cost for Tokina 12-24mm is $260 and Nikon AF-S 40mm is $160...total $420 :D

I'm now unsure if I should keep my AF-S 35mm f/1.8G since getting the 40mm f/2.8 micro?

as good as they are the tokina ultrawides still have their drawbacks (nearly all ultrawide dx lens have them).
CA, distortion and white fringe on straight edges are the first thing i noticed on both the 11-16 and 12-24 models. they also suffer from lens flare too.
imo the nikon 16-85 would be a better albeit narrower choice.
if you really need ultrawide FX is the way to go.

I can't agree that lens has enough faults of it's own and it's not an ultra wide either.
