Hi,
I can't believe I'm here.
In 1978 I worked in the camera department of a large UK retails store chain.
And I really wanted a Nikon camera.
Wages were low so I waited for something to come in second hand. In the Summer of '78, we took in two cameras in p/x for an Olympus OM system: a Nikon FM and a Canon FTBn in rare black rather than the common silver. Despite drooling over the Nikon, the assistant manager, a huge Canon fan, talked me into the FTBn. This remained my only camera until 2003 when I thought I'd better go digital. Again I looked at Nikon but a friend was having stuff published using a Fuji 602Z so I went that way too.
A year later I worked part time for a company writing software for Canon cameras where I got to play with all the new kit sometimes before official release dates. I read up on all the Nikon camera specs but, given the environment in which I worked, inevitably ended up with a 20D.
Fast forward to 2008, a new job, a child on the way and the unwieldy Canon and L lenses had to make way for something more family friendly. Therefore, after the birth, I sold my extensive Canon kit and, for reasons I can only put down to post-parenthood brain obfuscation, invested in MU43 stuff, the Panasonic G3, a Panny flash and a bunch of lenses. The plan was to have a portable powerful camera kit. Instead we take the excellent Canon S90 compact everywhere we go rendering the MU43 stuff redundant and, consequently, eBay fodder.
The D3300 should arrive Tuesday and the SB-400 flash sometime in the days following. Well it's only taken 36 years but I'm at last a Nikon owner. Almost.
