Great resource for using your 7100

Being new to DSLR photography I wanted to get as much "how to" info as possible. I had purchased Darrell Young's book on the 5100, and his for the 7100 was just as good. I wanted some "hands-on" instruction so I took the 2-day Nikonians class and was bombarded with info...great class, but info overload. Winston Hall was the instructor and he has released an online video series that goes over everything just as in-depth, but having it online means no furious note taking and "oh, I'll remember that(s)". It just came out last month, and some here might want to check it out...tunerphotography dot com for info.

Sure there is a cost...I believe it's about $100 for the full series.

I'f I remember correctly, the class itself was about $225 per day (2 days) plus travel, plus hotel...to me it was worth it, but to get the same info for probably 1/10 of the live cost and always have it at hand, is a pretty good deal to me.

He has a youtube channel that you can check out his other videos on many other topics...I find him to be a great teacher.

The best resource for the D7100?

YOU ARE!

Practice practice practice

Something I found useful when I started a few years, as a beginner to digital photography, and after a 25 year break from it too...

Use a tripod to get consistent shots.

Set the camera to AUTO. Frame and focus the shot. Take the photo and make a note of ALL settings.
Switch to manual (M) and set up the camera settings that you noted earlier. Retake the shot.
Try changing one setting at a time to see the effect

Repeat for various settings.

Do it all again using ASP settings.

I leave the camera in A (aperture) usually. Everybody has a preference. Do not leave it in Auto as you'll never learn.

Finally, use Scene modes. These really are good. Again, as discussed, see what the camera set up, and replicate as you figure out why. These are expert settings...you can learn lots.
