Graduated Neutral Density Filters

I am considering buying a couple of Grad ND filters for my 16-35mmVR lens. Would I be better off with the typical screw in types or go for the Lee square types?

The Lee rectangular filters give you much more flexibility. You"ll have extra room with them to move around and change the placement of the filter. I would not get the round graduated as you are stuck with where they sit over the lens.

A while back I picked up a cheap ($20) Colkin rectangular ND grad to try it out before buying an expensive "system". I just held it up to the lens during the exposure. Worked well, might want to try that first before dropping a bunch of $ on a system.

For Graduated ND filters, only the square ones make sense due to the limited positioning of screw-in filters. You get get by with screw-in if you wanted solid ND filters.
Another advantage of the square type is that you can use them on nearly any size lens. If you were to buy other lenses with different filter sizes you'd have to buy more ND filters. With the square type filters and holder, you only need to buy an adapter ring to fit the new lenses.

Looks like I will price up the Lee filter set up. If they are a better filter then the Cokins I do not want to waste money getting lesser quality filters only having to upgrade later.
Thank you for the feedback.

They will just have to wait until I get back from Africa, I have a ND4 and CPL so I should be ok for filters. If not I will manage.
