GPS

Hi guys, just a general query has anyone used the GPS function (if fitted) on their cameras, is it necessary as research on Nikon site suggest that the downloaded file only lasts a short while.

What you are referring to (I think) is that the GPS need some data from the satellites before it can compile the position. Those data doesn't last for more than a couple of month at a time. The file is downloaded automatically when you start the GPS receiver. So if you haven't used your GPS for some time, the start up time will be a couple of more minutes before you get a fix.
This is normally not a problem, just to be aware of that if you are going for a hike, start the GPS already at home to make sure that the GPS has the latest update for satellites positions.
The GPS remembers the position when you shut it off, so it will get a fix quicker when you start it again. If you travel around the world it has to find where it's now and that can take some time. Once it found it's position it starts quickly again.
Nikon cameras with built-it GPS are some Coolpix, D6 and Z9. Almost all other cameras can use an external GPS, a tiny little module mounted in one of the connectors. I have the di-GPS which works fine (most of the time!) and the positions are stored in the EXIF data.
You can also use your phone in some way, by connecting your camera via WiFi or Bluetooth (don't know exactly) and some app from Nikon. I have never used this, so I'm not familiar with this function.

Nikon Snapbridge app for any wifi enabled body. It can add GPS data to exif if you are using the app actively with camera when you take photos.
