Has anyone tried out Google's search for an image option? If you want to check and see if anyone has pilfered your photo(s), you can upload a photo to Google's image searching option, and it will bring up identical images. I did a search here and didn't see any posts referencing this type of information--sorry if it is a duplicate type of thread (if so, admins please feel free to delete this thread).

And sorry I wasn't sure in which subforum to post so admins please feel free to move this if necessary. ;)

I do this all the time. I found one of my pics circulating around tumblr.

Did you do anything about it, and if so, was the photo removed? :eek-new:

I only recently found out about this so I decided to try it on a lost kitten. The kitten isn't mine, but I uploaded the photo and only came up with exact hits for other sites where the lost kitten was advertised. Google also displays photos it considers to be similar to the uploaded photo. Well...it brought up lots of young woman's faces with similar coloring to the original photo, but no additional kitten photos. LOL!

It really is a great tool IF developed properly.
And we know that Google CAN do it if they really want to..
But hey, we photographers are probably somewhere in the bottom of the food chain (or money pile), so they may not really invest more effort on it.

In fact something similar was developed eons ago on the mobile platform called google goggles

Hmm...never heard of google goggles, but then again, I wasn't aware of this current option either!

There are certain images that is is so far off on though. A busy photo almost never will work. It will show other photos that are close in color and not subject.

Yes, I found out just how far off the results can be with the kitten photo and a couple others as well. :dread:

OH NO!!!!!!!

I just put in a photo of myself, and it returned something totally unexpected. Seriously! It brought up the first painting on this link! SAMSON Carl J. « AMERICAN GALLERY

And no...although I'm a female, I assure you, my photo WASN'T anything like that! :stung:

Anyone who puts images on a social website (Facebook, etc.), one of the websites that specialize in photography, public forums or a personal/business website with open access can expect the crawlers to put it/them in a lot of databases. Selling information is the primary source of income for internet businesses.

As Don said, his attempt didn't find whatever he posted on Facebook, and it didn't find mine either; however, I agree with you that once any images are uploaded, unscrupulous people will do anything for a buck. :(
