Most of the lower cost zooms are very soft at the long end, hence hardly usable at that FL. The 70-300G is one of the worse, with a lot of CA. Just check the 28-200 at 200mm for sharpness and CA before getting it.

I wish, downside of eBay is no try before you buy.

One day to go on the bidding my $76 for the 28-200 is still holding.

If I get it I'll post some sample images.

Decided not to think of myself as a cheapskate trying to save a few hundred dollars - I'm an environmental champion re-purposing old technology and saving the world.

Not getting the 28-200 lens - bidding getting a little rich, dropped out at about $140 US$ (shipping included).

I think I'll save a few dollars up and hit a store in the city that sells used gear - then I can try it out on my camera, taking that Try-Before-You-Buy-Used advice to heart.

I'll have to keep my ears open for a photography show (and swap meet). Hear there is one in Calgary in the fall.

Looking at another lens: AF D Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-f4.5D IF

Same era as my old 28-80 kit lens but not a kit lens. Wee bit further reach. The few reviews I've found on it are encouraging. Our friend Ken really likes it: Nikon 35-105mm AF-D Review and so does Nikon Autofocus (AF) Zoom Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5D IF wide-tele zoom lens- Part III

Technical Specification for Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5D IF lens:-

Type of lense: Autofocus Nikkor zoom lens with variable aperture, built-in CPU and a metal rear Nikon bayonet mount
Focal length: 35mm to 105mm;
Maximum aperture: f/3.5; (35mm=1:3.5; approx. 70mm=1:4.0; 105mm=1:4.5)
Minimum Aperture: f/22; approx.
Lens construction:
16 elements in 12 groups; with close focus Design (by comparison my 28-80 kit lens is 8 & 8)
Picture angle:
62° - 23° 20'

I think this specs out better than my old kit lens. It was not a kit lens and when released was a $450 lens (1995). It has a metal mount which I'm told is something I should look for. +

Worth adding to my kit bag, hoping for better lens than my 28-80. Wish is was wider than 35 at the wide end, but 105 adds 20% more zoom oomph.
