I just purchased my first DSLR and I'm happy I decided to go with Nikon over Canon. I've always loved the world of photography and i'm very excited to start shooting with a good camera finally. Looking forward to being a part of the Nikonites!

Welcome, good choice on the 5100.. I also own that camera and as a beginner, can attest to how much you will enjoy it!

I am not quite ready for a new lens. I have yet to take my first shot. What about filters? Flashes? Bags? What are some must have items for the D5100?

The 16-85 is, in my opinion, the best Dx zoom available and the price is very reasonable. I would get that over an external flash or any other accessories.

Once you start shooting you will see exactly what you need. More towards wide angle (broader landscapes), faster lens (f/2.8 or lower - more $$$ more but higher quality), macro for close-ups.

Look at what imaging software you have - you will need that for sure. There may be some good programs you can get for free but having a camera like this (I have a D5100 too and love it) means before long your going to want to get the images in your computer and really make them best they can be and use a whole other creative part of the process.
