I posted this in another thread and did a quick look-around to see if this was posted before and couldn't find anything, so here goes (mods, feel free to delete or merge if this is somewhere already).
In the past folks have been told to go to various websites to upload a JPEG (which many of us don't shoot) in order to determine your camera's shutter count. The number is in the EXIF data but not generally viewable with most EXIF viewers, and it does not display in Lightroom (no idea why). You can obviously download some of the cooler EXIF viewing tools out there (some of which are command line utilities), or if you have Photoshop or Elements you can simply open the file in there, go to File -> File Info, click on the Raw Data tab and search for ImageNumber.
Makes like a lot easier.
