Focusing 18-105

Just got an 18-105 and having difficulty understanding the two rings. I zoom with the larger ring and focus by pressing the shutter button. What is the purpose of the smaller ring? Am I missing something? Tried reading the lens instructions but not very helpful
When in AF mode, leave the smaller, thinner ring alone. That's a focus override ring. When in full Manual mode, use the thinner ring to focus.

Just like what Jack have mentioned, it is simply a focus override unlike the D series lenses which requires placing the lens AF/M to manual in order to override the camera's AF. This works well when focusing on a specific point including macro photography.
