Focus Priority

Tested it. Yes it does work, but only for shallow DOF.

Then I think I may have a problem on my D5300, because when I set it up per the instructions you found, press the shutter and it fires instantly. then does nothing or if in continuous trigger mode just fires until I release the shutter.

I'm going to contact my retailer today, and get some advice from them.

Thanks all.

Tried
Af-s Af-C
Release and Focus
Af-ON

The shutter just triggers...irrespective of being in focus or not :/

Did you contact Nikon?

I contacted my retailer today and it's now on its way to an authorised service centre, a company by the name A.J. Johnstone & Co Ltd of Glasgow. anybody had any dealings with them?

I'll post back here when I get any news about it.

Just got my D5300 back from A J Johnstone of Glasgow UK, it took them 4 weeks to get it back to me but it has been repaired and the focus priority selection now works as expected. :D

Anyone else suffering with this issue, I'd advise getting it checked and/or repaired.

Now to find time to set up and test focus trap ;)

Good luck :)
Finally frustration got the better of me..a lot of photos came out of focus..so decided to fix the issue..just tried all the permutations and combinations of the settings again before visiting the service centre..and in last ditch attempt reset the whole menu..RESET worked !!! :D

My D5200 does not trap focus but my friends d3100 does it perfectly. Can anyone please confirm if my d5200 is faulty or does all newer nikon dslr miss this awesome feature?
