Focus Point Illumination

I have adjusted my settings to provide for focus point illumination to always be ON, but the camera still only provides focus point illumination in red when I am in low light situations. I would like the focus point to always be in RED not grey at all times. In bright sunlight, it is difficult to see the focus point in grey. Does anyone know if this RED feature is available or what other setting is required? Everything I have read says that turning the focus point illumination to ON should do the trick but I am not seeing a difference. Thanks~

I can't spreak to the D90 specifically, but on the D7100 you can press the AF/M button on the camera body to illuminate the focus point(s); hold that button and they stay lit. To my knowledge there is no way to have the active focus point(s), illuminated in the viewfinder ALL the time without you having to do do something.
