I've been using the 685 for a while now, as has the Pup with her 350. Both of us have used several different diffusers and eventually settled on the AK. I really haven't bothered much using the flash off camera with the wireless trigger. I probably should make an effort to experiment with it. As to the difference between the 685 and the 350, I prefer the 685. It has more power, and longer battery life. It uses 4 AA vs 2AA in the 350. I don't really mind the extra size and weight that much for my macro work. Having said that, the 350 produces very good results and either flashes should work well for most photographers. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. There is a wealth of experience here and we are more than willing to share info. One observation, I find that diffused flash produces great results with a minimum of fuss. It is invaluable for insects that move a lot, and challenging lighting situations such as early morning, and deep shade. I definitely would not want to shoot macro without my flash setup available. However, I would recommend using available light when able, and the subject and lighting are appropriate. It gives a very different look that sometimes is worth the effort. It's always good to have different tools available, and the skill to use them well. This is a shot that would not work nearly as well with flash IMO.
