Looking for a flash for myself. Looking at an all round flash that would be good for a complete newbie to photography. I look forward to your recommendations.

It's all about these two things: what kind of activities should that flash unit cover, and how much would you like to invest.
If you want to go cheap (but not to compromise the quality of photos) buy a "third party", with a guide number of at least 20 (20 meters at 100 ISO) with the "auto" modes (doesn't HAVE to be TTL capable), brands like Metz, Sunpak... This would be sufficient for "all around" activities. If you plan to shoot weddings and alike, you might gonna need somewhat more power, so choose the model with a guide number of 50 and upwards.

If the money is not an issue here, go for SB-800 to SB-910 - any of them will do.

The sb-700 is user friendly from what I've heard. I just bought the sb-800, but haven't used it enough yet to say much about it. But I've heard some good info about it, and I was able to get my nearly brand new for $50.00 less than the sb-700. The sb-910 is suppose to be more user friendly than the sb-800 from what I've heard, but with just about the same capabilities.
Considering your wanting it as a newbie to photography, I'd recommend the sb-700. It works great from what I've heard, and it is user friendly and costing only about $300.00.

I was in the same boat a few months ago and was all set to pull the trigger on an SB-700. Went to the local photo store to get a price and walked out with a Phottix Mitros (His recommendation) Was cheaper and he said more powerful. So far I love it but I am still very new with it.
