In this case, I would expect the 18-300mm lens to not be as sharp at 300mm as the 70-300mm lens would be. Neither will be as sharp as a 300mm prime (generally). The 70-300mm lens also has the benefit of being an FX lens as Blacktop mentioned, so while still 300mm at the max focal length, it's using the center of the lens to put the image on your D7100's DX sensor, so you're avoiding the common issue of lack of sharpness in the corners of an image. The 18-300mm is a DX lens, so you're using the entire lens to get the image onto the DX sensor.</p></blockquote><p></p>
