Perhaps there is a lot of variation between copies? I have since picked up a 80-200 AF D F/2.8 but will keep the 70-300 VR for extra reach and easy carry......Can't say I use it much at 70 mm tho, usually rely on my 35 70 AF D F/2.8 for that......
