Extended Warranty

I contacted a UK Nikon specialist called Grays of Westminster who seem to provide a good service & have very good prices. I remembered why I prefer to buy off the internet & not talk to salesmen. However the shop does have good reviews. The salesman did heavily push their extended warranty - it must be near 100% profit for them I suppose.

Is there any advantage in a 3 year warranty? I would have thought that if an issue was going to develop it would show itself within a year? Note that this is warranty, not damage insurance. The cost is about £69 per year, membership needs to be in force for the warranty to work, so that's 3x £69. It comes with a magazine, website/forum access & several features that I wouldn't use mainly because of distance as I don't live in the UK.

Personally I think it depends what you are buying.

We bought my 14 year old daughter a tamron lens for her D3100 last year, and the extended warrenty (which covered accidental damage as well as malfunction) was cheaper than buying a decent quality filter to protect the lens. If the lens gets scratched in any way for another 2 years, we can take it back to the shop and get it repaired/replaced.... but for a camera I'm not sure other than peace of mind... but £69 a year isnt cheap!

On new equipment I am a firm believer in saving my money and not buying the extended warranty. With things like cameras and electronics, like you, I expect them to fail early or not at all. Plus, on most things my credit card company extends manufacturer warranties by a full year. Sure, one of these days I expect to be bitten by not having purchased one, but if I add up all I've saved when I've been offered them I'm still way ahead of the game.

That said, there are benefits to some extended warranty offers, particularly those that also cover accidental damage not covered by the original warranty. There was a discussion about it in this thread about 20 posts in or so.

Thank you both for your advice.

The computer equipment that I would be buying is about £4000. Much like Jake, I will always avoid extended warranties as they are generally just an "upsell" for the salesman giving them 100% profit. Although the amount I am spending is high, I'm not sure what manufacturing defect could occur that doesn't show itself within the 2 year Nikon warranty period. I'd basically be paying £207.00 for 1 year of warranty to cover something that hasn't shown itself in the previous 2 years. In my experience, 3rd party warranty will always try to find an excuse not to cover a problem. I was mainly concerned about what could go wrong.

Unfortunately my credit card does not give me any extra insurance, apart from a slight improvement on the Consumer Credit Act & Distance selling laws. I would add the equipment to my all risks home insurance policy. I suspect that it would be more useful for me to put the money towards all risks insurance, rather than extended warranty.

Thank you for you help in making me think more clearly. I'm hoping my new clear thinking mode lasts at least another 10 minutes! :)
