Expo disc

I am considering purchasing an expo disc. I have three main lenses that are 77mm but do have one that is 82mm. My question is could I just get a 77mm disc and use a 82mm to 77mm step down ring and it work? Also I would like any thoughts that you may have about getting a disc or not and how well you think they work. Thanks for any input that you have to give.

I have both the standard white balance and the portrait. If you want one buy the largest lens size you have. For the smaller lenses you don't need a reducer, just hold it over the lens.

Yes they do work and are best when you have competing light sources of varying colors.

I've had and used one for several years now. I think they work quite well, especially under tough or difficult lighting conditions. I hear a lot of, "But, they take so long to use!". Boo hool..... let me call the Wahbulance for you. Once you understand how to use it (the step-by-step instructions make it sound like a rocket-to-the-moon-mission), it doesn't take too long at all. 30 seconds, BAM! Perfect WB.

Here's a shot using AutoWB with incandescent lights:

Using the ExpoDish to set a manual WB:

You can use a 77 on a larger lens filter just by holding it in front of the lens if you don't want the hassle of a step-down ring.

Or just use a lens with a native 77mm filter, set the WB, and change lenses.

The reason I was asking about the step down ring is that the 82mm looks like it has been discontinued and the places that do have it the price is much higher than the 77mm. I was wondering if I bought a 77mm and used the ring to block the light out from around the disc would it work?

I googled expo filter as I had never heard of them, found an 82mm for $159AUD

ExpoDisc is a trade name, and 82mm is the largest they made. Fact is, they just redesigned it and 77mm is the ONLY size they make right now.

The older versions are still floating around and can be had in various sizes.

The new version is the default neutral type, and comes with warming filters to make it the portrait version.
