Got lucky when this guy visited my garden this evening.

The second image was my first attempt at using Photoshop to crop and resize.

Yes, Strix nebulosa. We also frequently get Strix varia the Barred Owl.

Nice! Where I live in England I see Tawny Owls and Barn owls quite often, only managed to get photos of the latter though. We have a few others species but I rarely see them. Out to try and get some more owl shots next week when my new D7100 shows up.

These are great captures but they could be darkened and saturated a bit more in post processing in my opinion. Since you now know how to crop and resize, why not use the contrast and saturation adjustments...

Much better. Now it's up to you to decide how you really like it. But remember to try having a wide histogram so you have a large white to black tone range.

Would you mind explaining exactly what you mean by "wide histogram" please and how do I go about achieving it?

What I mean is that you have to have blacks and whites, both with detail and all the range in between. Unless you want a special effect. If you look at your histogram when you have a dull or flat subject (like your owl for example), you don't have blacks and not enough contrast to make the picture punch. In that case, you can darken the blacks and bring up the highlights (contrast adjustment) and then you can adjust the brightness to give your image character. Harder to explain than to do (at least for me).
Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks Marcel, it certainly does help. I currently have PSE 5 but have just ordered 13 with the intention of doing a lot more "digital playing" as my wife calls it. It seems the only limit is ones imagination.
