This suggests metering is required for auto ISO to work. Interestingly, the camera allowed me to set exposure compensation values, although they don't seem to go into effect. On an unrelated note, I found I could use the scroll wheel to change ISO (with the Fn button pressed; the button needs to be assigned to do this) instead of using the info button and rocker switch.
