Dynamic Area Auto Focus Question

I'm experimenting with Dynamic Area AF for moving subjects (runners). Apparently (if I read it right) it allows me to choose a focus point and the other points serve as a backup in real time.

My question is: Do I have to keep focusing (button continuously pressed half way down) for it to work, or do you just press it just once to start the focusing and the camera then tracks?

Thanks.

You have to keep it pressed. Also look into back button focus, it can be easier to keep that back button pressed than a half press on the shutter.

Back Button Focus is a great tool for so many photographers and is something I think everyone should try at least once. Below are a few sites that talk about the how and why of Back Button Focus.

Here is a good YouTube video that goes over the why and how of Back Button Focusing.

You can do a search of the forum on "Back Button Focus" or BBF and see the many threads that have been created on this subject.

Try it, You will like it.

I must admit it took me a while to switch to BBF. What won me over was when I needed to shoot with continuous AF tracking (AF-C) in burst mode, where decoupling the AF and shutter buttons makes it much easier to shoot. In those situations, once I frame the subject (e.g. a runner) I keep the back button pressed with my thumb to continuously focus track the subject, while long pressing the shutter release with my index finger intermittently to shoot short bursts of photos. This would be much harder - if not impossible - to pull off with the shutter button for both AF and shutter release.
